Mobile device convergence is here today with computer-like Smartphone and PDAs, which are a necessity for today´s mobile workers and consumers. The devices that include advanced applications, enhanced memory capabilities and varying connectivity possibilities (WiFi, Bluetooth, 3G) have enabled a totally new way to work, communicate, play as well as search for and store information and memories.

Undeniably, organisations have faced the fact that mobile devices are growingly complex to manage. In addition, the development within the personal computer sector, in the 80´s and 90´s when IP based networks were taken into use, is currently happening to mobile terminals. When the connectivity of devices increases and business applications are taken into use, the requirement for security and remote support will increase dramatically. Similar to PCs, back-up and smooth device change/restore procedures have to be applied to mobile devices. Even though mobile devices bring within many beneficial functionalities, they represent yet another class of devices that requires management, support and security. In addition, the growing number of mobile device applications may result in uncontrollability of application versions and updates. If mobile device management is not well organised, coping with the ever growing pool of mobile devices and applications will result in a loss of time, money and even valuable and confidential information. Moreover, there must be a workable way to manage a mobile device (e.g. take back-ups, correct settings and lock the device in the case of theft) over-the-air, regardless of the location, be it at home, the office or on the other side of the world!
